About this race

Birchwood 10K is a long-standing road race starting and finishing at Birchwood Shopping Centre in Warrington, with the opening four kilometres run on fully closed roads before joining shared carriageway for the remainder. The certified, accurately measured course heads out through the Birchwood area and on towards the rural village of Croft, following a mix of suburban roads and quieter lanes on a tarmac surface throughout. Runners tackle a trio of rises as the route crosses bridges over the motorway before turning back towards Birchwood, giving the course an undulating character rather than a flat profile. The closing stretch brings competitors back along a fast finishing straight lined with spectators near the shopping centre. Organised by Spectrum Striders, the race has run for over forty years and is chip timed throughout, drawing club and charity runners from across the North West.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
