About this race

The Girton 5 Mile Trail Race starts and finishes at Girton Recreation Ground on Cambridge Road, just north-west of Cambridge, and runs almost entirely off-road. The route heads out through Girton Millennium Wood before crossing open farmland and looping around Girton Wood, then returning along the same network of paths back to the recreation ground. Underfoot conditions are a mixture of grassy trails, gravel paths and compacted earth or mud tracks, with no tarmac sections on the main loop. The course is flat throughout, without any significant climbs or descents, making it a genuinely beginner-friendly introduction to trail running as well as a fast option for runners chasing a trail personal best. Mile markers are placed at regular intervals along the route to help runners judge pace. The flat Cambridgeshire fenland-edge landscape surrounding Girton gives the race an open, exposed feel across the fields.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
