About this race

The Frankenstein starts on the historic High Street in Marlow and finishes at Marlow Sports Club in Pound Lane, taking its name from Mary Shelley's novel, which she completed while living in the town. The approximately 10km multi-terrain course is roughly one third road and two thirds trail, leading runners off the tarmac and into the beautiful Chiltern woods for a proper autumnal off-road adventure. A key feature is a demanding trail climb nicknamed the "Bolt", one of the toughest sections on the route. The mix of surfaces and the wooded trail sections make this a hillier and more technical proposition than its road-based sister races, though it remains fully signed, marshalled and mile-marked. Organised by Marlow Striders, the race finishes back at the Sports Club, with drink stations positioned on course to support runners through the varied terrain.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
