About this race

The Tunnel Vision Night Run is an out-and-back 5 mile race starting off Scotland Road in Market Harborough, behind the Protheroes garage. The route follows the Brampton Valley Way, a disused railway line, out along a flat, hard-packed track before turning back the way it came. The defining feature is the 422 metre Oxendon Tunnel roughly halfway along the route, a long, pitch-black former railway tunnel that runners pass through twice, once in each direction. Mood lighting is installed inside the tunnel, but a head torch is still required to run through it safely. Running after dark on Thursday evening, this is the earlier and blacker of the two Tunnel Vision events, with the tunnel section giving the whole race a genuinely atmospheric feel. The course surface suits road or light trail shoes, and finishers are rewarded with a hot drink and biscuits at the end.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
