About this race

The Chepstow Running Festival Half Marathon takes place entirely within the grounds of Chepstow Racecourse, home of the Welsh Grand National, on the Welsh side of the Severn Estuary. The course covers four laps of a 5km circuit, run on the racecourse's own roads and paths with some short gravel sections rather than on the turf itself. The route is described as scenic and undulating, taking runners around the racecourse grounds with around 715 feet of elevation change over the full distance, giving a genuinely varied profile without any single severe climb. Because the entire race takes place inside the racecourse, it is free from traffic throughout, with each mile accurately marked and plenty of marshals on hand. Runners finish to a mock chequered flag finish in an iconic Welsh sporting venue, with a lively event village, food and drink, and a themed medal waiting at the end.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
