About this race
The Hardmoors 26.2 Goathland Half Marathon starts and finishes at Goathland Village Hall and is entirely self-navigated, with no markings on the ground, so runners carry a route description and map throughout. From the village the course heads out past Beck Hole and the Mallyan Spout waterfall area, through Hut Slack and close to Newton Dale Halt, before climbing onto open moorland via checkpoints at Simon Howe, a hilltop cairn, and Wardle Rigg, continuing out to Yewtree Scar before returning along the same high ground. The route mixes footpaths, bridleways, wide stone tracks and forestry roads with steep, bracken-covered hillsides, boggy and grassy sections, wooden boardwalks, stream crossings and a single railway line crossing, alongside a patch of dense woodland locally nicknamed the 'haunted wood'. With gates, stiles and standing stones along the way, it is a genuinely tough, technical half marathon rather than a fast trail route.
