About this race
The Great North Run is a point-to-point half marathon from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields on the North Sea coast. The race starts on the Central Motorway in Newcastle, then crosses the River Tyne into Gateshead and heads east along main roads through Felling and Wardley. The course continues north-east past Primrose, Hedworth and Whiteleas, through West Harton and on to the finish on the seafront at South Shields. The profile is rolling, with an early descent into Gateshead, a long climb to the high point around the 8 km mark, a long descent towards Primrose and Hedworth, and a final gentle rise before the finish drops to the coast. The course is almost entirely paved road, and the event is a mass-participation race with tens of thousands of runners.
